This Onehunga villa had remarkable character and street appeal, but the owners needed more space for their growing family. While the home had undeniable charm, it required thoughtful updates to support modern living—without losing the original features that make these properties so unique.

The project architect designed a plan to deliver a large, contemporary open-plan extension, seamlessly integrated with the home’s traditional features. The result is spacious living areas that flow effortlessly to new outdoor spaces, along with an additional master bedroom, walk-in wardrobe, ensuite, scullery, and laundry.

What we did

The project included:

  • Removed the rear lean-to and built a large, modern rear extension.
  • Creation of a large open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, opening to outdoor living via 9.2mtr sliding doors.
  • Addition of a master bedroom with ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, plus a separate scullery, bar, laundry, and mudroom.
  • Relocation and renovation of the main bathroom.
  • Installation of new vertical Abodo timber cladding and large areas of APL thermally broken architectural joinery.
  • Construction of a 60m² deck connecting the new extension to the existing pool.
  • New back door and veranda, harmonising the traditional exterior with modern elements.
  • Full upgrades to plumbing and electrical services throughout the home.

The owners now enjoy a home perfectly suited to their family’s needs. The open-plan living areas, seamlessly connected to the outdoor space and pool, provide an ideal setting for entertaining and everyday modern living—delivering the lifestyle they envisioned.

I had the pleasure of working with Auckland Build 360 on a renovation and extension of a heritage villa in Onehunga. We had put in a large amount of time and effort to get the design just right for the clients, and the decision to use Dwayne and Troy to bring it all together was the right call.

The design required great attention to detail with heat-treated timber cladding, 1.2m wide eaves and 9m wide high-performance aluminium joinery. But also, due to the nature of working with 120-year-old sticks of timber, it required a delicate touch and an intricate knowledge of traditional construction. From start to finish and everything in between, all aspects of the build were covered by Auckland Build360 in a professional and timely manner.

Where surprises were uncovered behind dusty walls, only solutions were offered,
and each offer was considered and reflected upon whether it was appropriate for the design and quality of the build. It was a team approach to construction that I as an architect, strive for to get better end results for our clients.
